Maintenance beats replacement
PCs are replaced long before they are worn out. Why most slowdowns are software, why that matters, and what maintenance can honestly fix.

There is a familiar story about PCs. You buy one, it feels fast for a year or two, then it slows down, and eventually you replace it. Most people treat that cycle as a law of nature.
We think it is mostly a habit, and an expensive one. This post is about why.
Hardware rarely fails first
Modern PC hardware lasts a long time. An SSD, a mid-range CPU, and 16 GB of RAM from several years ago still handle browsing, office work, and most everyday software without strain. When a machine like that feels slow, the hardware is usually not the problem.
What changes over time is the software on top of it. Startup programs accumulate, one install at a time. Background services and scheduled tasks pile up. Storage fills with caches, leftovers, and files nobody remembers. Uninstalled software leaves pieces behind.
None of that is mysterious. Each cause can be found, named, and in most cases reversed. A machine that got slower through accumulation can get faster the same way it got slow, one identifiable change at a time.
Why replacement wins anyway
If the causes are fixable, why do so many people buy a new PC instead?
Partly because fixing them takes knowledge that most people were never given. The relevant settings are scattered across Windows, and the consequences of changing them are rarely explained.
Partly because the industry around "PC cleaning" burned the trust it needed. Decades of alarming scans, invented error counts, and paid fixes for invented problems taught people that maintenance software is the thing you remove from a family member's PC, not the thing you install.
So replacement became the safe answer, even though it costs hundreds of dollars and adds another machine to the e-waste pile for what is often a software problem.
What maintenance can and cannot do
We want to be precise here, because this industry usually is not.
Maintenance can remove accumulated startup load, reclaim storage, take out software that should have left cleanly, and undo settings changes that no longer serve you. On a machine that has drifted for years, that work is often noticeable.
Maintenance cannot turn old hardware into new hardware. It will not make a ten-year-old laptop run modern games, and we will not promise you frame rate numbers, because honest numbers depend on your machine and your workload. If a change eclean makes has an effect, it should be observable on your PC, not asserted in our marketing.
Why we work on this
We are Jack Holmes and William Hallin. Before eclean, we built AtlasOS, an open project for modifying Windows that grew to millions of users. The community there held us to a standard we came to value. Document what you change, explain why, and keep a route back.
AtlasOS suits enthusiasts who are comfortable rebuilding Windows. Most people are not, and should not have to be. eclean is our attempt to bring the same standard, explained and reversible maintenance, to a normal desktop app that anyone can use.
