A full system drive isn't just an inconvenience. Below a few gigabytes free, Windows Update starts failing, games stutter as the page file runs out of room, and some apps refuse to launch. The fix is spread across four different corners of Windows, and the drive will start refilling the day you finish, so treat this as a triage order you'll be running again, not a cure. The biggest recoveries come first.
Prefer it done for you? The cleanup half of this guide is a single Cleaner scan in eclean, and its large-file finder handles the hunting half. It's free, with no trial timer, and you see exactly what it found before anything is removed. Download eclean for Windows.
1. Find out what's actually using the space
Don't guess. Open Settings → System → Storage and let the breakdown load. The categories tell you where to aim. If Apps dominates, uninstall. If Temporary files dominates, clean. If Other dominates, you're hunting large files by hand. Sort your drive by size in File Explorer (search size:gigantic finds files over 4 GB, slowly, with no context about what any of them are).
2. Take the big, safe wins
- Previous Windows installation. After a feature update,
Windows.oldholds a full copy of your old system, often 20–30 GB. Remove it via Disk Cleanup → Clean up system files → Previous Windows installation(s). It disappears on its own after ten days, but you don't have to wait. - Windows Update Cleanup in the same dialog is frequently another 5–10 GB, and it regrows with every patch Tuesday, which is why this dialog becomes a repeat destination.
- Hibernation file. If you never use hibernate,
hiberfil.sysis silently reserving RAM-sized space (16 GB of RAM ≈ 6–12 GB of disk). In an administrator terminal:powercfg /h off. - The Downloads folder. Installers you ran once, archives you already extracted. Sort by size, be honest with yourself.
3. Move what doesn't need to be on C:
- Games move cleanly: Steam's Storage settings and the Xbox app both migrate installs to another drive without redownloading.
- Point Documents, Pictures, and Videos elsewhere via each folder's Properties → Location tab.
- OneDrive users: turn on Files On-Demand so synced files live in the cloud until opened.
4. What not to delete
Leave C:\Windows\WinSxS alone (it looks huge but is mostly hard links), never delete the page file blindly, and don't touch System Volume Information, which holds your restore points.
The recurring problem
The frustrating part is that the space fills back up. Caches regrow, updates leave new leftovers, and in three months you're back at step 1. A full pass through this list is a solid half hour across Settings, Disk Cleanup, File Explorer, and a terminal, fine as a one-off, wearying as a routine.
Keep it this way without the ritual
Cleaner runs the whole sweep in one pass. Clutter grouped by browsers, apps, Windows, and games with a preview before anything goes, plus a large-file finder that shows size and modified date next to every result, with no size:gigantic guesswork. Pro adds cleaning on a schedule, so the crisis stops recurring. Download eclean free. The core stays free for good.
