Every app you install wants to start with Windows, and most of them get their wish without asking twice. A year into a PC's life, sign-in means a dozen programs fighting over the disk at once, and the machine feels slow for the first five minutes of every session. The good news is that startup entries are the safest thing in Windows to experiment with. Disabling one never breaks Windows itself. Worst case, an app doesn't launch until you open it. Here's how to read the list and what each common entry actually does.

1. Open the startup list
Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, then pick Startup apps in the left sidebar (on Windows 10, it's the Startup tab along the top). The same list lives in Settings → Apps → Startup with plain on/off toggles. Task Manager shows more detail, so this guide uses it.
Each row shows the app, its Publisher, whether it's Enabled, and a Startup impact rating. To disable one, select it and click Disable (or right-click → Disable). The change takes effect at the next sign-in, and re-enabling works the same way. Nothing is uninstalled. You're only deciding what launches automatically.
2. Read the Startup impact column
Startup impact is Windows' own measurement of how much CPU and disk time each app used during recent boots, High, Medium, Low, or None. Not measured means the entry is new or hasn't run at startup yet.
Sort by this column and work from the top. A single High-impact entry you don't need is worth more than five Low ones. Right-click a column header and enable Startup type and CPU at startup if you want the raw numbers behind the rating.
3. Common entries that are safe to disable
These are conveniences, not requirements. The app works identically when you launch it yourself:
- Steam, Epic Games Launcher, GOG Galaxy, EA app, Ubisoft Connect. Game launchers only need to run when you play. Their background updates resume as soon as you open them.
- Spotify, iTunes Helper. Music players open fast on demand; nothing is lost.
- Zoom, Skype. If meetings start from calendar links, these don't need to be waiting.
- Adobe Creative Cloud, Java Update Scheduler, and other updaters. Updaters exist to check for updates; letting them check when you actually open the app is enough for almost everyone.
- Cortana / Copilot. Assistants you invoke deliberately don't need a head start.
- Phone Link. Only useful at startup if you actively use phone notifications on the desktop.
4. Entries that depend on how you use them
Not unsafe, but disabling them changes behavior you might rely on:
- OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive. Files stop syncing until you open the app. If other devices or people depend on your files being current, leave the one you actually use enabled and disable the rest.
- Discord, Slack, Teams. Disabled, you won't see messages or get called until you launch them. Fine if you open them daily anyway; not fine if people expect to reach you.
- Clipboard managers, screenshot tools, PowerToys. Utilities that listen for hotkeys only work while running. If you use them, they've earned the slot.
5. What to leave alone
A few entries pay rent:
- Security software. Third-party antivirus must start with Windows to do its job. (Microsoft Defender never appears in this list; it's built in.)
- Audio and touchpad helpers. Entries from Realtek, Synaptics, or ELAN handle things like headphone jack detection and touchpad gestures. Disabling them can silently cost you those features.
- Laptop maker utilities. Software from Lenovo, Dell, HP, or ASUS often drives function keys, battery modes, and display switching.
- Anything you can't identify. Check the Publisher column and search the exact name first. An unknown entry with no publisher is worth investigating, not blind-disabling; it could be junk, or it could be the thing that makes your fingerprint reader work.
6. Startup apps vs. services
If something runs in the background but isn't in this list, it's probably a Windows service or a scheduled task. The distinction matters:
- Startup apps launch when you sign in. They're per-user conveniences, safe to toggle freely.
- Services (see
services.msc) start with Windows itself, before any sign-in, and include things drivers and core features depend on. The old advice to bulk-disable services for speed is where "safe experimentation" ends: savings are unmeasurable and the breakage shows up weeks later, disguised as something unrelated. Leave services on their defaults unless you know exactly what a specific one does. - Scheduled tasks (Task Scheduler) fire on triggers like sign-in or idle time; updaters that don't appear in the Startup list often hide here.
Startup apps are the lever with all of the upside and none of the risk. Start and mostly end there. It's also the first stop in speeding up Windows 11 overall.
